Dark shapes moved in the forest and evil began to multiply in the woods. 1100, the Istari and the Eldar discovered that some evil entity resided at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. He gave it to Galadriel, and remarked prophetically that she would in turn pass it to an individual who would also be called Elessar. Ī legend says that Gandalf was given by Yavanna the Elfstone of Eärendil, to bring to the peoples of Middle-earth as a token that the Valar had not forsaken them. He was also known as Incánus in the south, and Tharkûn to the Dwarves. He was known by many names during the long years he remained in Middle-earth: Elves named him Mithrandir, the Grey Pilgrim, while the men of Arnor named him Gandalf, which became his most common name. Gandalf never went to the east and apparently restricted his activities to the Westlands of Middle-earth, where the remnants of the Dúnedain and the Eldar remained to oppose Sauron. Círdan gave Narya to Olórin with a prediction of his future struggles with evil, and a promise that it would support and aid him in his labours. Círdan divined in Olórin a sense of strength and power despite his appearance as a bent and aged old man. Olórin submitted to the will of Manwë and departed Valinor to Mithlond in the year T.A. Furthermore, the One Ring, the location of much of Sauron's power, presumably still existed somewhere in Middle-earth. However, Manwë said that it was all the more reason why he should go. Manwë selected Olórin, who, at first, did not wish to go, as he feared Sauron. In his "youth" he was known as Olórin and lived in Lórien. At the beginning of Time, he was amongst the Ainur who entered into Eä. After his fall in Moria, Gandalf returned to Middle-earth as head of the Order, robed in white.
